ADVISER SURVEY ON STUDENT WEB SELF-REGISTRATION

1. One of the criteria to be eligible to use student self-registration was that students must be "officially admitted" to UMC (including undecided). PSEOA, NWTC-EGF, and Adult Special were not eligible. To what extent do you agree with this:

COMMENT:

  • ADULT SPECIAL COULD BE ELIGIBLE UNDER SOME CONDITIONS.
  • All students who register at UMC should meet with an academic advisor. As a small campus, this should be promoted as a reason to attend this school.
  • Full-time, degree seeking students are especially important to UMC. Without some sort of controls (ie. Limited access to on-line enrollment, class sections can be filled by part-time and others - thereby limiting access by our full-time students.
  • I agree that PSEOA and EGF students should not eligible, but other Adult Special should have the opportunity to take a course without getting a signature. Actually, I think they already don't have to get a signature, since most of them would not have an adviser. Seems friendlier to let them have access.
  • I am not so sure that full-time PSEOA students should be left off the self-registration eligible list.
  • PSEOA in good standing with their high schools should be able to use the system. It would make sense to enroll college in the High School on line. It would seem that only those students on academic probation should not use the system.
  •

    2. A second eligibility criteria was that students must have a minimum UMC cumulative GPA of at least 2.00. To what extent do you agree with this:

    COMMENT:

    • Appears to be a good cutoff point.
  • If a student has a 2.00 gpa, I feel he should have the assistance of his advisor.
  • If we askingi students to be like adults, shouldn't we treat them accordingly. The GPA is good, and as an advisor I would like to confer with them, but I believe the web enrollement should be open to all accepted students. (BTW the students come by to visit either way--See #5)
  • See above
  • Those in academic trouble MUST see their advisor in some capacity. Further, those on academic contract or 4-year graduation contract should have some limitations.
  •

    COMMENT:

    • Most all my students came by in advance to discuss course selection AND other things.
  • Most of my advisees are PSEOA students this spring.
  • N/A, because none used web registration.
  • None of my advisees used the system. Most of my advisees are PSEOAs
  • Not enough. I believe all should. I'm particularily bothered by a 4 year graduation guarranty and the possibility that the University not reqiuring the use of academic advisors.
  • Registering for classes should be with the imput of the "advisor"
  • Students wanted to make sure that they were registering for courses in the right sequence. Also, those students that planned on graduating within the next couple of quarters wanted to visit in person.
  •

    • I don't know yet.
  • I have not idea, I don't plan to be responsible after the fact.
  • I have't had (taken) the time to check.
  • It is too early to say. I only "hope" that by their 3rd or 4th year class sequences work out

    COMMENT:

    • I agree but I doubt that their education and experiences hav prepared them to make the best choices.
  • It's probably too early to really assess the responsibility aspect of the student and self registration.
  • Maybe self registration should be 3rd and 4th year students.
  • Since this is a switch for students, we do need to put in writing somewhere, the students and advisors shared responsibility for course selection and academic planning.
  • Those advisees that are always ready with their schedules and have a backup plan, etc., were the ones that used electronic registration - therefore, no, I didn't see an increase or decrease in student responsibility.
