COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT:
1. Bob thanks for this opportunity to share some thoughts about the process. As far as timeliness, completeness, and usefulness, the centralized grade reporting system is a big step backwards. The process that I and many teachers use (merge mail messages to students after exams) is more complete, more timely and seems to do a better job at communications. Hope this helps. I would be happy to discus it further. XXXX XXXX
2. Can you design the program to not go back to the top of the columns each time a grade is entered? After entry we had to continually scroll down to the next entry.
3. Entering a student grade line-by-line and then Okaying each caused a navigation problem when the original screen returned. It should take the teacher back to his or her original spot on the grading without scrolling each time. This was frustrating.
4. Entering the grades was easy but the time waiting until saved was long depending upon how the system was working. Recommend modifying so data can be entered and then saved in batch.
5. Expecting faculty to report grades for all students without getting their input on the process was not good. Bring the issue to faculty and make your case for why you think all grades should be included. Let them decide if they want to do that as a faculty. If you want larger participation, let shared governance have a go at it.
6. Have to find an easier way for advisor's to get the grades of their advisees.
7. I found it easiest to wait until the last day to submit the grades for my classes. This allowed other faculty members to have problems with the system first; I just waited until I had read all the updates via e-mail as to how to navigate through the system. As a result, I did not find it difficult.
8. I had one student tell me that her grade for the course had not been sent to her: she was the only one to comment at all. I like the system, though, overall.
9. I like it
10. I like the idea of the process being geared to mid-term assessment of student performance, but not for the purpose of facilitating withdrawal for students who are not doing well. Those students need to concentrate on salvaging their course, not washing out as if their unfortunate performance had not occurred. That does not help them mature.
11. I send a grade email summary after every test which is more complete and up to date than this process; however, for faculty who don't do that, this works well.
12. I still have not received a password!!
13. I very strongly agree with the concept and objective of the grade notification system. However, the system itself is very cumbersome. I am not a programmer, but I think it would be feasible to have faculty enter all of the grades and then save once rather than saving for each student. A computer program should be able to separate the data by student and recombine them for the notification. It also seems odd to me that an electronic notification takes so long. The notification was due Tuesday afternoon, and by the next week, my students still had not received it. I also have to mention that I could do my own grade notification using Outlook in approximately the same amount of time. But the advantages of me doing it on my own are: 1) the students would receive it immediately, 2) no additional university employees or resources would need to be used, and 39 I can provide advice to my students along with the notification. I know this because I sent emails to every one of my students that were failing, and for those 30 or so it took about the same amount of time as for one class with the official system. I used the blind carbon copy feature and categorized my students to accomplish this. In summary, the objective is laudable, but the implementation is lacking.
14. It was a little annoying to have to save after every entry. I didn't not go to the training and it was still extremely easy to use.
15. Much better than the paper method.
16. None, I would like to see it used again.
17. Should be required once at a set time and then faculty can use it at other times if they desire. Establish set times that faculty need to have the data entered by (if they desire to) like once every three weeks. Have one time it is required.
18. Some had trouble with the amount of time required. I did mine using modem access and found that at the "off hour" it was fast enough.
19. Some stronger means of student accountability after they have received their grades. This year, a had the lowest amount of students schedule an appointment to see me of any quarter/semester that I've taught here.
20. The website needs a scroll function rather than after entering each student's grade and hitting enter, it needs to remain at the last entry. Although new here, I find it amazing that student's are NOT aware of the advisor system/role. I have now sent 3 emails and even made phone calls to get my advisees to stop by my office, YET I have not seen anyone! I am still skeptical of the email approach; seems too many students respond differently than if they were called or written a letter on University letterhead. XXXXXXX XXXXX
21. When a grade is entered the screen jumps to the top of the page. In large sections this requires scrolling down the page with each entry. It would be easier if the whole class list was filled out and then entered as a group instead of individual entry.
